West Basin Municipal Water District staff contribute time, labor to help the environment

"We selected the Gardena Willows Wetlands Preserve for Earth Day because of its location - it's literally 5 minutes from West Basin's headquarters," said General Manager Rich Nagel. "We're proud to restore the environment by getting our hands dirty."

GARDENA, Calif.-Half of West Basin Municipal Water District (West Basin) staff have contributed three hours of labor each to improve the Gardena Willows Wetlands Preserve in Gardena. In honor of Earth Day, West Basin is encouraging staff to give back as part of its commitment to Environmental Stewardship.

The West Basin team was comprised of 15 staff members, including 3 from senior management and at least one staff member from each department. From 1-4 pm, they helped with weeding, installing a fence and doing trail maintenance at the Gardena Willows Preserve.

This effort was initiated by West Basin's internal "Green Team," a volunteer group of staff that identifies environmentally sustainable practices and products which are implemented at the agency. Getting colleagues out into the community for Earth Day to help maintain a local wetlands preserve helps support a local watershed and its wildlife, in addition to a small nonprofit organization and a city within West Basin's service area.

West Basin Municipal Water District is a wholesale water agency based in Carson, California, that is reducing its dependence on imported water from 66% today to 33% by 2020. As part of its Water Reliability 2020 program, West Basin is expanding locally-produced water supplies that include recycled, conserved, and desalted ocean-water. West Basin is committed to Water Reliability, Water Quality, Sound Financial and Resource Management, Customer Service, and Environmental Stewardship.

Gardena Willows Wetlands Preserve is located at Arthur Johnson Memorial Park, between Normandie and Vermont Avenues in Gardena. It is part of the Dominguez watershed, a migratory stop for ducks, a permanent home for bird species, frogs and other amphibians and functions to clean runoff before it reaches the Dominguez Channel and the Pacific Ocean.
