Solar Cup Boat Building and Racing Competition

Solar Cup is the world’s largest high school solar boat building and racing competition in the world! This innovative seven-month water education and environmentally sustainable technology program is funded by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and its member agencies including West Basin Municipal Water District. Additional information on the program is available by contacting Education Coordinator Janel Ancayan at janela@westbasin.org.

Solar Cup 2021 Competition Coverage

West Basin is proud to sponsor the following four high schools with support for the 2021 Solar Cup Competition, which includes hands-on and online activities:

Student Recognition Event – June 10, 2021

The competition culminated in a virtual awards ceremony on June 10, 2021 where students were recognized for first, second and third place honors in each of 10 challenges conducted over the last five months. More than 300 students from 16 high schools throughout the region participated in the virtual 2021 Solar Cup, which featured challenges that tested students’ technical, engineering and creative skills.
