Imagine a Day Without Water 2020

Tue, 10/20/2020 – 3:48pm

On October 21, West Basin will partner with hundreds of water agencies, nonprofit organizations, and other leaders from across the country to recognize the sixth annual Imagine a Day Without Water, a national day of education and advocacy about the importance of water. Led by the Value of Water Campaign, participating agencies work together to raise awareness and educate Americans about the value of water.

In the United States, the vast majority of residents don’t have to worry about the infrastructure that delivers water to and from their homes, businesses, and public spaces. The reality is that much of the country’s water infrastructure is deteriorating as it gets older and many communities around the country, including some in California, have failing water systems, or systems that are unable to provide adequate access to safe drinking water.

On Imagine a Day Without Water, West Basin will ask its residents to pause and reflect on the significance of a safe and reliable water supply in sustaining healthy families and local communities, a strong economy, and beautiful outdoor spaces for recreation.

West Basin provides high-quality drinking water supplies to nearly one million residents in its service area. The District also produces upwards of 40 million gallons per day of recycled water that supports local industrial operations, protects groundwater basins against seawater intrusion, and provides sustainable irrigation water to schools, parks, golf courses, and other public landscapes. More than $700 million has been invested into the water recycling program since 1995 in order to expand and secure a local source of drought-proof water.

Earlier this year, at the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak, West Basin assured its communities that the virus has no impact on the safety or supply of their drinking water. West Basin is committed to making ongoing investments in its critical infrastructure and treatment facilities so that every person in the service area continues to have access to safe water. In doing so, the District is taking important steps to strengthen the value of water and ensure that a day without water never becomes a reality.
