Two West Basin Teams Win Solar Cup Boat Competition Honors

Solar Cup is the world’s largest high school solar boat building and racing competition. More than 300 students from 16 high schools throughout the region participated in the virtual 2021 Solar Cup Competition, which featured challenges that tested students’ technical, engineering and creative skills.

The competition culminated in a virtual awards ceremony on June 10, 2021 where students were recognized for first, second and third place honors in each of the competition’s 10 challenges. Among those winning teams include West Basin sponsored teams, who excelled by showcasing their problem-solving abilities, artistic design skills and engineering knowledge.

The innovative water education and environmentally sustainable technology program is funded by Metropolitan and its member agencies, including West Basin. High school students gain hands-on experience in alternative energy, water conservation, and technical reporting.
