West Basin Commemorates 75 Years of Water Reliability (1947-2022)

This year, West Basin Municipal Water District is celebrating 75 years since its formation. The District was created by a vote of the people in 1947 to make local water supplies more reliable through the protection of local groundwater sources and identification of new water sources.

For the past 75 years, the District has been delivering on its mission of water reliability for its coastal Los Angeles service area communities through:

  1. Imported drinking water supplies via the Colorado River and California aqueducts purchased from Metropolitan Water District of Southern California
  2. A world-renowned recycled water program, producing five types of recycled water for irrigation and industrial use. Since 1995, the District has produced nearly 250 billion gallons of recycled water, offsetting the use of precious imported and groundwater supplies
  3. Progressive, cost-effective water use efficiency and conservation programs that have distributed or installed more than 330,000 water saving devices since 1991

West Basin remains committed to its mission to “provide a safe and reliable supply of high-quality water to the communities it serves” and to being an innovative leader in the water industry.

Throughout 2022, in recognition of this major milestone, West Basin will commemorate key moments in its history. For more information, please visit the West Basin History Page.
