West Basin Teams Earn Honors in 2022 Solar Cup Competition

Solar Cup is the world’s largest high school solar boat building and racing competition, which has transitioned to an online S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) challenge program over the past two years. Hundreds of students from 17 high schools throughout the region participated in the virtual 2022 Solar Cup competition, which featured challenges that tested students engineering, physics, math and technical writing skills.

The competition culminated in a virtual awards ceremony on May 12, 2022 where teams were recognized for first, second and third place honors in each of the competition’s seven challenges. Among those winning teams include West Basin sponsored teams, who excelled by showcasing their problem-solving abilities, artistic design skills and engineering knowledge.

Congratulations to the West Basin teams for winning honors in the following categories in the Los Angeles County Region:

LENNOX MATHEMATICS, SCIENCE, AND TECHNOLOGY ACADEMY, Inglewood

  3. Second Place Tie – Onshape

PALOS VERDES PENINSULA HIGH SCHOOL, Rolling Hills Estates

  1. First Place Tie – Zero-Emission Vehicle
  2. Third Place – Green Careers
  3. Third Place – Robot Powered Conservation Device
  4. Third Place – Electronics
  5. Spirit of Solar Cup Bart Bezyack Award
  6. First Place Tie– Solar Panel
  7. Second Place – Public Outreach

The innovative water education and environmentally sustainable technology program is funded by Metropolitan and its member agencies, including West Basin. High school students gain hands-on experience in alternative energy, water conservation and technical reporting.
