Peninsula High School Team Wins Fifth Place in Regional Solar Cup Boat Competition

Solar Cup is the world’s largest high school solar boat building and racing competition. This year, West Basin sponsored four teams to participate in the 18th annual Solar Cup competition.

• Lawndale High School – Lawndale, CA
• Lennox Math, Science, and Technology Academy – Lennox, CA
• Mira Costa High School – Manhattan Beach, CA
• Palos Verdes Peninsula High School – Rolling Hills Estates, CA

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (Metropolitan) modified this year’s competition to Solar Cup 2.0, which provided sponsored teams with a revised curriculum of virtual assignments. 

Out of a total of 105 regional students in the Metropolitan service area, 14 Palos Verdes Peninsula High School students participated and secured fifth place in the modified competition. The team excelled by submitting weekly reports that showcased their problem-solving abilities, artistic design skills, and engineering knowledge.

The innovative seven-month water education and environmentally sustainable technology program is funded by Metropolitan and its member agencies, including West Basin. High school students gain hands-on experience in alternative energy, water conservation, and technical reporting.
