West Basin Municipal Water District Statement by Board President Scott Houston on the non-functional turf related legislation (AB1572) signed by Gov. Newsom on Oct. 13, 2023:
“California’s passage of AB1572 marks a historic step forward in statewide water management. The new legislation will benefit the communities of the West Basin Municipal Water District by creating more sustainable, climate appropriate landscapes that conserve drinking water, reduce runoff, increase biodiversity, and beautify public spaces.
“West Basin water providers and residents have made significant progress replacing grass lawns with drought resilient landscapes. This legislation brings new opportunities to build upon that success, especially in our commercial, industrial and public agency spaces.
“We look forward to working with and supporting our customers, cities and businesses in the years ahead to find innovative ways to transition away from decorative lawns that serve no functional purpose.”
