Virtual California-Friendly Landscape Classes Available Through November

West Basin and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California are partnering together to offer free weekly online classes on the topics of grass removal and California-friendly/native landscaping.

The classes are being hosted at a time when West Basin is offering a grass removal rebate of $3/square foot. Qualifying residents may receive up to $15,000 to help defray the costs of transforming a landscape from grass lawn to California-friendly plants.

The following two classes are currently being offered on a weekly basis through the end of November.

 

 

California Friendly and Native Landscape Training

Topics include:

  1. Look at your yard as a mini-watershed
  2. Create a living soil sponge that holds on to water
  3. Treat rainwater as a resource by contouring the land to capture it
  4. Select and arrange plants to maximize biodiversity and minimize water use
  5. Control your irrigation to minimize water waste

Turf Removal and Garden Transformation Workshop

Topics include:

  1. Evaluate the opportunities in your landscape
  2. Plan for your garden transformation
  3. Identify the type of turf grass in your yard
  4. Remove grass without chemicals
  5. Build healthy living soil
  6. Select climate-appropriate plants that minimize water use and maximize beauty and biodiversity
  7. Implement a maintenance schedule to maintain a beautiful garden

Each class is approximately 1-1.5 hours and free to any resident living within the West Basin service area.
