West Basin Receives Grant for its Rainwater/Greywater Program from the United States Bureau of Reclamation
West Basin Municipal Water District (West Basin) was awarded $70,000 in grant funding for its Rainwater/Greywater Program from the United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR). The program will incentivize water users to use rainwater and greywater as primary outdoor water sources.
The grant funding will allow West Basin to purchase rain barrels and cisterns to offset demands for imported, potable water supplies, and to offer rebates and technical assistance to encourage water users to install laundry-to-landscape greywater systems.
The project includes rebate incentives for 250 greywater systems and 25 cisterns, and provides 250 rain barrels that, together, are estimated to save over 250 acre feet of water over the life of the devices.
The program is in line with West Basin’s 2015 Urban Water Management Plan. The total project cost is $148,008. Eleven projects were selected by USBR to receive a total of $568,662 for Small-Scale Water Efficiency Projects, as part of the WaterSMART grant program.
The Small-Scale Water Efficiency Projects seek to improve conservation and sustainability, better manage or make more efficient use of water supplies, and leverage with local and state funding to support $1.15 million in efficiency improvements.
